Just yesterday, we discussed the strength of the Cincinnati Bearcats' ground game as we look ahead to this weekend's matchup for the Texas Tech football team. When Saturday arrives, the Bearcats may be missing a key component to their attack, though, as running back Gi'Bran Payne is listed on the first injury report of the week.
Cincinnati has officially listed him as "questionable" on the first of three injury reports that will be released ahead of Saturday's game. The senior left last week's loss to West Virginia with an ankle injury and did not return.
He entered that game leading the Bearcats in rushing with 392 yards to go along with two touchdowns. But against the Mountaineers, he carried the ball just seven times for 26 yards.
Still, the Bearcats were able to rack up 233 yards on the ground against a putrid West Virginia defense. Junior Cole Tabb picked up the slack, amassing 188 yards and two touchdowns on just 15 rushes. Senior QB JC French IV also chipped in with 53 yards and a rushing touchdown on 13 carries.

If Payne can't play this weekend, or if he is limited, it would still be a huge blow to the Bearcats. He and Tabb are the one-two punch that drives the Cincy offense.
Overall, the Bearcats run for an average of 231.2 yards per game. That's the 11th-most in the entire country.
Certainly, their plan this weekend is to try to keep the ball away from the Red Raider offense and protect their defense that ranks just 128th in the country in yards allowed per game. But to do that, they will likely need a healthy Payne to pair with Tabb.
Both Payne and Tabb have run for over 400 yards this season. In all, Cincy averages 39 rushing attempts per game while throwing the ball only 33.8 times per game.
If Payne is not at full strength, they may be limited in their ability to ground and pound against a good Texas Tech run defense. That's because Payne is their workhorse.
Though Tabb now has more yards on the season (448 compared to Payne's 418), Payne has carried the ball 20 more times this season. Tabb is only 5-foot-8 and 200 pounds, meaning he is more of a big-play weapon similar to Texas Tech's J'Koby Williams.
Meanwhile, Payne is a bit bigger at 5-foot-10 and around 210 pounds. He functions as the between-the-tackles runner who picks up tough yards when needed, something that is crucial in a run-first, ball-control offense. Thus, his potential absence could alter the way Cincinnati tries to move the football on Saturday,
So keep an eye on the Cincinnati injury report. Payne is a huge cog in their offense, and if he is unable to play or if he gives it a go but is slowed by his injury, it could be a huge advantage for the Red Raiders.
