Look, I didn’t think the NCAA was going to lose this one. And the NCAA lost this one. At least for now. Because Lubbock County Judge Ken Curry has decided to grant Brendan Sorsby a shot at playing this season.
That’s right, the expected starting quarterback for the Texas Tech football team just got a huge win in court over the NCAA despite having a rather significant and noteworthy gambling-related eligibility removal.
Curry granted Sorsby a temporary injunction in his case against the NCAA. That means he’s going to be eligible to play for Texas Tech this season (unless this gets appealed and goes to the next court and judge to take a look at). That means the Red Raiders are (for now) coming out on top of this saga that has cast an ugly shade over the bulk of this offseason.
Now, there are some limits here.
Texas Tech football fans shouldn’t look at this as a complete and total win over the NCAA. Technically Sorsby does get punished as he will be suspended for the first two games of the Red Raiders’ season. But that’s against the Abilene Christian Wildcats (unless the Texas Longhorns take Cody Campbell’s challenge) and the Oregon State Beavers out in Corvallis, Oregon.
Sorsby will be back for the Red Raiders’ Big 12 opener at home against the Houston Cougars. That has to be a huge relief for Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football team.

Of course, Texas Tech football fans have a few thoughts on the matter. And for a lot of folks, it doesn’t seem like they’re all that upset on the Red Raiders getting Sorsby on the field this season.
Wow, it's Texas Tech vs the world... Wreck'em 👆 https://t.co/gdTZAtWTb3

That said, not everyone is on board with this decision.
This is terrible for college football and if it was any school other than us we’d be complaining instead of defending this

1. That’s not what I asked.

2. I don’t agree with the ruling. I don’t think Sorsby should be allowed to play this season.
And there are even some nuanced opinions on this.
Do I think it’s right ? No . Am I mad about this decision? No .

This is controversial, to say the least. Given the nature of what happened here, folks outside of Lubbock aren’t going to be fond of Texas Tech going forward. But, well, for the most part, it seems like Texas Tech football fans aren’t worried about outside opinions.
