Texas Tech football history: The series with Cincinnati is pretty odd for TTU

As we continue to examine more and more aspects of Texas Tech’s football history and matchups against various different teams, getting to Cincinnati shows that there are some odd series that the Red Raiders will get to participate in with all of the new members in the Big 12.

Now, Texas Tech and Cincinnati don’t exactly play each other on a super regular basis, historically speaking, that is. They should face each other more and more a little more often as we move forward thanks to Cincinnati joining the Big 12.

And it’s not like either of these programs has fond memories of a former head coach that they have each had, but Tommy Tuberville did leave Texas Tech in a weird way to go lead the Cincinnati Bearcats. But it’s not like either team is really all that thrilled to look back at their respective Tuberville eras.

Also, there’s not many matchups here. Texas Tech has never even taken a trip to face off against the Bearcats in Cincinnati. This series is just so dang odd for Texas Tech (and also probably for the Bearcats as well).

Texas Tech football history: I don’t think anyone really wants to call this the “Tommy Tuberville Bowl”

In total, there are just two games to this series. The most recent being a 2024 Texas Tech win over Cincinnati by a score of 44-41. The only other time the Red Raiders and Bearcats have battled was all the way back in 1968 when Texas Tech hosted Cincinnati for a 10-10 tie in Lubbock.

And that’s it. That’s all. No more. No other games. At least not yet.

On the bright side, at least Texas Tech has never lost a single matchup during this, uh, *checks notes* rivalry (I guess). But it’s not like this is even a real rivalry. It’s not like the series between LSU and Alabama where folks were joking about it being the Nick Saban bowl.

I don’t think anyone cares to look back at the times that Tommy Tuberville coached in either Lubbock or Cincinnati and brag about those periods in their favorite team’s football history.
