It took a while, but the Texas Tech Red Raiders finally managed to win a rather significant game. In January of 1952, Texas Tech managed to not only get its first ever bowl win, but the Red Raiders also managed to get a win in the Sun Bowl, a venue and event that provided plenty of frustrating moments for Texas Tech dating all the way back to 1938.
14 years! We’re talking about 14 years from Texas Tech’s first ever appearance in a bowl game (and also the first ever trip out to El Paso for the Sun Bowl) to when the Red Raiders actually managed to beat someone in a bowl game (and in the Sun Bowl).
This was such a perfect moment for the Red Raiders. Such a well deserved moment for a football program that definitely deserved to get a win after losing five bowl games by an average margin of defeat of 4.4 points.
Texas Tech football history: It took a few years, but Texas Tech finally got a bowl victory in the 1952 Sun Bowl
This had to have been such an exciting win for the Red Raider fans who could make it out to El Paso to watch Texas Tech against the Pacific Tigers. Just pure cathartic football for a fan base that (up to that point) had to have been tormented by losing bowl games in such close fashions.
And in 1952, Texas Tech managed to go out and get an 11 point win for the Red Raiders. There’s no way that didn’t feel good for Texas Tech and its fans.
With the win over the Tigers, Texas Tech got to secure a 7-4 record on the season thanks to this 25-14 victory in front of around 17,000 fans. DeWitt Weaver was Texas Tech’s first ever bowl-winning coach. And that feels a little noteworthy as well.
