Texas Tech’s first year after Graham Harrell still featured a 3000 yard passer

Taylor Potts wasn’t Kliff Kingsbury. He wasn’t Graham Harrell. He wasn’t B.J. Symons or Cody Hodges or Sonny Cumbie. And the 2009 season for Potts and the Texas Tech Red Raiders was admittedly a bit of an odd one for numerous reasons.

But specifically for Potts, while things could have been better, he still managed to continue Texas Tech’s new tradition of having a quarterback throw for more than 3000 yards in a single season, even without playing in two games and with two other performances being a good bit underwhelming.

I mean, he only had 19 pass attempts against the Kansas Jayhawks (and he threw for just 94 yards in that game). Against New Mexico, we’re talking about 23 pass attempts (and just 215 passing yards there). He didn’t even get to face Kansas State or Nebraska.

And even when you factor in those four games into everything else that was going on, you still get a season in which the Red Raiders had someone throw for more than 3000 yards. Historically speaking, that just doesn’t happen for Texas Tech. He was the sixth quarterback to ever do that!

Texas Tech football history: Taylor Potts had a pretty up and down time during the 2009 TTU football season

And so, yeah, the 2009 Texas Tech football season was a bit of a mess for a number of reasons. And for Potts, he really wasn’t consistent or great, but you did see some flashes of potential.

He threw more interceptions than touchdowns when TTU faced North Dakota, and then a couple weeks later, he put together a performance in which he completed 46 of 62 passes for 420 yards, three touchdowns, and just one pick vs. the Texas Longhorns.

Later in the season, Potts would throw for 310 yards against the Texas A&M Aggies, 388 yards vs. the Oklahoma Sooners, and then finished the year with 372 vs. Michigan State. Not bad stats. On the season, he completed 309 passes of his 470 attempts for 3440 yards and 22 touchdowns against 13 interceptions.
