I think it’s truly ridiculous that we don’t get to see Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders meet up with Sonny Dykes and the TCU Horned Frogs this season. Truly absurd. This is a series that has a ton of history, dates back nearly a century, has a really cool trophy, and is just about evenly split.
Why on earth is the Big 12 not making this a mandated game? What are we doing here? Is that fair for me to ask?
I know we don’t want to end up with the scheduling shenanigans that the SEC has with an attempt to try to preserve every single rivalry series ever. And in many ways, yeah, I get it, there are so many teams in the Big 12 that don’t have a true rival because this conference is pretty spread out geographically and it’s got a weird number of teams.
The Big 12 is a weird and delightful conference and it’s still absurd that we aren’t getting a Texas Tech vs. TCU matchup in 2025.
Texas Tech football history: Texas Tech has a very narrow lead over TCU in rivalry matchups
Texas Tech has managed to win 32 games here. TCU, meanwhile, has put together 31 wins. And there are three ties here.
In the most recent matchup, TCU barely beat out the Red Raiders, securing a (frustrating and annoying) 35-34 win over Texas Tech in Fort Worth. And unfortunately, we don’t get to see McGuire and the Red Raiders try to get revenge this season. We’re going to have to wait a little bit. And that is also frustrating and annoying.
Looking at the history of this series, like many college football rivalries, it’s a bit streaky. Texas Tech and TCU have traded wins in 2023 and 2024, but prior to that, the Red Raiders had lost four consecutive matchups vs. the Horned Frogs.
In the last 10 games, TTU has just three wins over TCU. And that element of this frustrates me a bit as well because McGuire and the Red Raiders have a ton of talent assembled on this roster with some really exciting coordinators orchestrating schemes. I’d like to see them matchup with TCU this season! And we won’t get that.
Texas Tech is 18-10-3 at home against TCU while the Red Raiders are 14-21 in away games against the Horned Frogs. Since they’ve been members of the same conference, Texas Tech holds a 20-18-3 advantage in the series.
