Okay, look, I don’t necessarily love making Texas Tech’s schedule more difficult than it absolutely has to be, but I do like the idea of getting more matchups for the Red Raiders to face off against the BYU Cougars as we move forward.
And it has very little to actually do with anything about BYU, to be completely honest. I just think it’s truly absurd that these two teams met up once before World War II and then once after the Cougars made to move to join up with the Big 12.
We’re talking about over EIGHT decades of football that passed between these two programs meeting up with one another. And that, my friends, is an absurdly long amount of time that I would like to see the Red Raiders and Cougars meet up on a few more occasions on a regular basis moving forward. And since they’re both part of the Big 12 now, I’m sure that we can make this happen, right?
Texas Tech football history: Texas Tech hasn’t played against the BYU Cougars anywhere near enough
Again, the first time these two teams faced each other was all the way back in 1940 in Lubbock. On Friday, October 18, 1940, Texas Tech managed to get a 21-20 home win over BYU. And then we had to wait a very, very long time for the two teams to meet again.
But they would meet again.
In 2023, during the second year for the Red Raiders under Joey McGuire, Texas Tech took a lovely trip to Provo, Utah and subsequently had a very awful, no fun trip facing off against the Cougars. BYU managed to get a 27-14 win over Texas Tech in a game that wasn’t enjoyable for anyone. Except BYU, I guess.
This season, we’ll get the third ever meeting between these two teams as they meet up on November 8, 2025. There aren’t any meaningful trends here. These two teams haven’t faced each other anywhere near enough just yet. But, I, for one, find myself hoping that Texas Tech will continue the not-trend of the home team winning literally every single game up to this point.
