Texas Tech has a long history of producing top wide receivers. Now, the Red Raiders are starting to be known as a popular destination for talented transfer pass catchers as well.
The latest big-play weapon to commit to Tech is Miami (Ohio) transfer Reggie Virgil who committed to the Red Raiders on Friday night. This is a huge addition for head coach Joey McGuire and his new offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich.
The Floridian is a 6-foot-4, 190-pounder who will have one year of eligibility remaining. In 2024, he caught 41 passes for 816 yards and nine touchdowns. His average of 19.9 yards per catch led the Mid-American Conference.
It was a breakout performance for Virgil this fall after he caught only one pass in each of the last two seasons. This year, he had a reception in all 13 games for the RedHawks including a season-high six against Bowling Green. He also had a 113-yard, two-touchdown performance on just three catches against Eastern Michigan.
Rated by 247Sports.com as a 4-star transfer, Virgil had a visit scheduled to Oklahoma following his visit to Lubbock however he canceled that trip to Norman after deciding to become a Red Raider. He's currently rated as the No. 16 wide receiver in the transfer portal and his addition is a huge win for the Red Raiders who needed to add a proven veteran wide receiver.
Virgil's addition will help offset the loss of 2024 leading receiver Josh Kelly who was fantastic in his one season as a Red Raider. The transfer from Washington State caught 89 passes for 1,023 yards and five touchdowns in the regular season while playing in the slot.
As of the time of this post, Tech has the best transfer class in the country according to 247Sports.com. With five players already in the 2025 class, the Red Raiders are off to a great start when it comes to filling the holes that must be addressed this offseason if head coach Joey McGuire and his program are going to contend for a Big 12 championship next year.
