The BYU Cougars were all sorts of fascinating to keep up with in 2024 as they marched through their schedule, beat up on a number of different foes, and managed to get to 11-2 on the season, capping things off by beating Deion Sanders and Colorado in the Alamo Bowl. Going into 2025, they’ll be looking to contend for a Big 12 title.
And as it turns out, Texas Tech is also looking to compete for a conference championship this season. So, what sort of challenge can we expect here?
Well, there’s no doubt that BYU is going to have a defense that is far better than most in the Big 12. They’re going to cause some headaches for the Red Raiders (and other teams that historically enjoy scoring points by the dozen).
And if the (very limited, very small) history between Texas Tech and BYU is anything to help examine what this game might look like, there’s a decent chance that things will be close when the Red Raiders and Cougars match up in early November.
2025 Texas Tech football schedule: When will the Red Raiders face the BYU Cougars?
On November 8, Texas Tech will welcome the BYU Cougars to Lubbock in what will be just the third meeting ever between the Red Raiders and one of the newest additions to the Big 12. There’s over 80 years of history here, but, prior to this season, we’re talking about these two teams meeting once every 83 years.
So, yeah, not a ton of history here. And really not much to take away from that to try to figure out historical trends. Don’t do that.
However, if you are going to do that, then maybe we can snarkily note how Texas Tech is unbeaten against BYU when the Cougars play in Lubbock? I feel like that’s something we can note, I guess. Not too much else to dive into with the history there.
The 1940 game isn’t something that can really provide insight into what this contest might look like. And a lot has changed for both of these teams since 2023, in what was the second year of the Joey McGuire era in Lubbock.
