Though the Texas Tech football team has recently gone all-in on the transfer portal as a means of adding talent to the roster, at his core, head coach Joey McGuire will always be a high school coach. As a result, as long as McGuire is in charge, the program will continue to prioritize the high school recruiting ranks.

One player Texas Tech football fans need to know is Frisco, Texas safety Donovan Webb. The elite prospect has set nine visits over the next few months, and Texas Tech is one of his intended destinations.

According to an X post by Steve Wiltfong of On3 Sports, Webb has set up a visit to Lubbock on April 11. Webb is also expected to visit TCU (April 17), Baylor (April 25), SMU (May 2), Kansas State (May 22), Ohio State (May 30), Michigan (June 6), LSU (June 13), and Oklahoma (June 20).

247Sports.com's composite rankings show that Webb is a 4-star prospect. He's the No. 25 safety and No. 296 overall player in America in the class of 2026.

An elite athlete who dabbled as a running back in 2024, amassing 172 yards and a touchdown on just 19 carries (9.1 yards per attempt), the 6-foot, 182-pounder's future is on the defensive side of the ball. That's where he was credited with 120 tackles, five interceptions, two forced fumbles, and nine pass breakups as a junior. It was the second year in a row that saw him surpass 100 tackles after he had 114 as a sophomore.

Texas Tech needs to add some depth to the roster at the safety position. Presumed 2025 starters A.J. McCarty and Cole Wisniewski (an offseason portal addition) are both going into their final seasons of eligibility. Meanwhile, Chapman Lewis (another presumed starter) will be a juinor this fall. Also, key backup safety, Devynn Cromwell will be a senior in 2025.

In the high school signing class of 2025, Tech did add two 3-star safeties, however, a player of Webb's ability would instantly upgrade the future of that position. So keep an eye on this recruiting battle as Tech tries to beat out some of the top programs in the country for one of the most coveted defensive backs in Texas.
