The Texas Tech basketball roster continues to change rapidly. After picking up two transfer commitments over the weekend, now, it is being reported that the Red Raiders are set to see their third member of the 2024-25 team enter the portal.

With Darrion Williams having entered the portal and Eemeli Yalaho reportedly doing the same last week, on Sunday, multiple sources on social media reported that Kevin Overton will also explore his options. No official word has come from Overton or Texas Tech at the time of this post, but if the reports are true, the news wouldn't come as a huge shock.

Overton, a redshirt sophomore in 2024-25, was a key reserve for the Red Raiders. He averaged 7.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game in 36 appearances, 35 of which came off the bench.

At times, Overton showed that he is capable of being an offensive force. He had 14 points at Cincinnati in January, and he put up 20 against Arizona in the Big 12 Tournament.

In all, the lefty had 11 double-figure games this past season. However, consistency was an issue for him.

That's because he had 16 games with five or fewer points. Thus, it was always a hit-or-miss proposition as to what the Red Raiders were going to get from him on a game-by-game basis.

Overton's size (he's 6-foot-5), was an asset as he proved to be a willing and capable perimeter defender. However, he lacked the outside shooting touch needed to be considered a building block for the future.

Shooting just 33.1% from 3-point range, he isn't the caliber of shooter that Tech values in its offensive system. Thus, he seemed locked into a reserve role in Lubbock.

Now, the Red Raiders have added three transfers (LeJuan Watts, Tyeree Bryan, and Donovan Atwell), each of whom is 6-foot-5 or taller and is a better offensive weapon than Overton. Therefore, it is not hard to envision Overton's role decreasing next season, especially if Tech adds another transfer wing or guard, which is entirely possible.

Overton arrived last offseason after putting up 11.3 points and 3.3 rebounds as a redshirt freshman for Drake. In 2023-24, he started all 35 games, but this past season, he made just one start for the Red Raiders.

Perhaps it is likely his desire to find a place where he can compete for another starting role. It doesn't appear that he would ever be a starter for the Red Raiders, though, especially after the recent portal additions to the program. Therefore, if Overton does indeed enter the portal, it won't be a shock to most Texas Tech basketball fans.
