As we work through all of the issues that the Texas Tech baseball team has right now (and as we focus on all of the problems that the Red Raiders’ pitching staff has displayed so far this season), it’s hard not to go over what might be the most visible issue of all: the truly horrifying home run issue that Texas Tech has.
It's less than ideal.
I’m not totally sure on how to contextualize the issue, to be completely honest. This one is so unique.
The gap that exists between Texas Tech’s pitching staff (with the 54 home runs that they’ve permitted) and the Cincinnati Bearcats (with the 39 home runs they’ve allowed) at No. 2 is as large as the gap between Cincinnati and the Baylor Bears (who have given up the 4th-fewest home runs in the Big 12.)
In other words, this is a massive problem that truly stands out and is very visible and I don’t think there’s a quick fix for.
No Big 12 pitching staff has allowed more home runs than Texas Tech’s, which is a massive problem for the Red Raiders
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 54 home runs allowed in 27 games
- Cincinnati Bearcats - 39 home runs allowed in 30 games
- Kansas State Wildcats - 35 home runs allowed in 28 games
- Oklahoma State Cowboys - 32 home runs allowed in 28 games
- Kansas Jayhawks- 31 home runs allowed in 28 games
- TCU Horned Frogs - 30 home runs allowed in 27 games
- Utah Utes - 29 home runs allowed in 25 games
- BYU Cougars - 27 home runs allowed in 26 games
- Houston Cougars - 25 home runs allowed in 27 games
- Arizona State Sun Devils - 25 home runs allowed in 28 games
- Baylor Bears - 24 home runs allowed in 27 games
- UCF Knights - 23 home runs allowed in 26 games
- West Virginia Mountaineers - 22 home runs allowed in 24 games
- Arizona Wildcats - 22 home runs allowed in 27 games
Unfortunately, this issue is going to be connected to some of the others that the Red Raiders are experiencing with their pitching staff. The excessive number of walks allowed, the multitude of hits given up, and so on and so forth. When opponents are able to get on base and then they hit a home run, the problem explodes considerably.
