It’s so much fun to explore all of the ways that the Texas Tech Red Raiders are going out and dominating on the defensive side of the ball. I’m a huge fan of what the Red Raiders have been able to accomplish throughout the season with Shiel Wood as the defensive coordinator in Lubbock and with all of that talent that was brought in via the transfer portal.
There are so many areas in which we’ve seen Texas Tech thrive on defense. The Red Raiders aren’t perfect on that side of the ball, but they’re pretty dang impressive and they have what is arguably the best defense in the Big 12, which is something that I don’t think any Texas Tech fan would have expected from their team roughly 12 months or so ago.
Right now, in conference play, the Red Raiders’ defense leads the Big 12 in total defense in Big 12 games. And that metric and the Red Raiders holding that spot at this point of the season is such an impressive thing.
Big 12 football stats, Week 10: Texas Tech’s defense leads the Big 12 in total defense in Big 12 conference games
Here’s what the Big 12 looks like right now:
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 285 yards per game
- Utah Utes - 322.2 yards per game
- UCF Knights - 326.5 yards per game
- Arizona State Sun Devils - 339.6 yards per game
- Arizona Wildcats - 345.8 yards per game
- Kansas State Wildcats - 370.6 yards per game
- Houston Cougars - 376.8 yards per game
- BYU Cougars - 386 yards per game
- TCU Horned Frogs - 393 yards per game
- Iowa State Cyclones - 404.4 yards per game
- Cincinnati Bearcats - 424.6 yards per game
- Baylor Bears - 431.4 yards per game
- Kansas Jayhawks - 435.4 yards per game
- Colorado Buffaloes - 443 yards per game
- West Virginia Mountaineers - 471.4 yards per game
- Oklahoma State Cowboys - 474.4 yards per game
There are so many things worth bragging about when it comes to Texas Tech’s defense right now, but I think one of the most important things that we can brag about here is the fact that the Red Raiders are allowing just about 40 yards fewer per game than what Utah is this season and the Utes have the second-best defense in this metric in the Big 12 at this point in the season.
