Beat a team by a bunch of points, move up in the college football rankings. Now, we have to acknowledge that Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders didn’t move up much in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll top 25 college football rankings.

A large part of that is absolutely because the Oklahoma State Cowboys are by far one of the worst teams in the Big 12 this season and there are a ton of one or two-loss teams in the top 25. It’s not like Texas Tech’s 42-0 win over Oklahoma State was the most impressive thing that happened in the country this past weekend.

But it, alongside a few losses here and there around the country, helped the Red Raiders move up from No. 15 to No. 13. And right now, Texas Tech is still holding the No. 2 spot in the Big 12 in the latest Coaches Poll rankings.

Coaches Poll college football rankings, Week 10: Texas Tech holds onto the No. 2 spot in the Big 12

  • BYU Cougars - No. 10 overall
  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - No. 13 overall
  • Cincinnati Bearcats - No. 16 overall
  • Houston Cougars - No. 22 overall
  • Utah Utes - No. 24 overall

It is worth noting that the TCU Horned Frogs and the Arizona State Sun Devils both received votes in this set of rankings, though neither of those teams were ranked. Arizona State actually dropped from the top 25 (and Houston climbed in) after the Sun Devils lost at home to the UH Cougars.

The Big 12 race is so interesting to me this season. Right now, the top four teams in the conference all hold decent spots in the top 25 rankings (Houston and Cincinnati should both probably be ranked a little bit higher than what they are) and all four of the top teams in the Big 12 are 7-1 or better.

The final few weeks of the regular season in the Big 12 are going to be absolutely fascinating to watch. Any one of those teams could make it to the conference championship game this season (the Utes even still have a shot at that happening).
