Throughout much of the series history between the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Houston Cougars, the Red Raiders haven’t actually had an advantage over UH. It just hasn’t worked out much in Texas Tech’s favor (historically speaking, that is).

I mean, we’re talking about a series that TTU lost the first couple of games in by dropping the 1951 and 1952 editions of, responded by winning back-to-back games in 1953 and 1954, and then managed to lose EIGHT of the next 10 meetings. And those meetings were spread out from 1955 to 1981. We’re talking about a few decades in which the Cougars tormented Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders happened to lose seven games from 1979 to 1985, won a blowout in 1986, experienced a tie in 1987, lost the next three games in the series from 1988 to 1990, and then saw their fortunes shift considerably in 1991.

Texas Tech football history: The Houston Cougars have an advantage over Texas Tech in the all time series, but not in recent history

Because from 1991 up to 2023 (the last time that the Houston Cougars and the Texas Tech Red Raiders have had a chance to face one another), Houston has won a grand total of ONE game against TTU. Meanwhile, the Red Raiders have happened to win 10 such meetings.

That’s a pretty good reversal of fortunes right there.

At the moment, Texas Tech has a six game winning streak and will be looking to build upon that this season. That said, the Red Raiders truly aren’t great against UH when it comes to playing in Houston OR when playing against the Cougars as members of the same conference.

Texas Tech is 3-10-1 in away games and 3-8-1 in conference games throughout the history of this series. That doesn’t necessarily mean that UH will get a win here (largely because much of that success for Houston came very early in the series decades ago), but it is something worth noting.
