Before we get too far into this, there is something that absolutely has to be noted: Texas Tech has literally never lost to the University of Utah and I, for one, would appreciate it if that continued to be true by the time this season is wrapped up.

And that’s because this season, Texas Tech football fans will get to witness something that hasn’t happened in half a century. The Texas Tech Red Raiders will meet up with the Utah Utes for the first time in over 50 years. We’re talking about more than 5 decades. It has been a very, very long time since these two teams have met (and a lot of things have changed since they last faced each other).

I mean, the college landscape was just a very different thing back then. Among the many other things that have changed over the years is where these two teams compete. It’s worth pointing out that Utah wasn’t in the Big 12 last time Texas Tech and the Utes met up.

To be fair, the Big 12 didn’t exist back then. But yeah, these two teams were in different conferences and the whole concept of how football was played was just so different from when these two teams met up in 1972 and 1973.

Texas Tech football history: The Red Raiders are set to face Utah Utes in 2025

The first time these two teams faced each other, Texas Tech got a very, very easy win over the Utes. On September 16, 1972, Texas Tech handed Utah a 45-2 beating. Which, I mean, that’s just one of the most lopsided sorts of results you could possibly ever get. Shoutout to the 1972 Texas Tech teams for flattening Utah.

A season later, things were a bit closer as Texas Tech managed to beat Utah by seven points, winning 29-22. Also, hey, worth noting that these scores are absolutely bizarre. And now I’m very curious as to how things will pan out when they meet up on September 20, 2025.
