Texas Tech history: The Red Raiders have never faced Kent State, that changes in 2025

Heading into the fourth season of the Joey McGuire era of Texas Tech football, we are going to be treated with plenty of firsts. While McGuire isn’t new to Lubbock, we’re still going to get some opportunities to see a few things that just haven’t happened before.

Like, a Mack Leftwich offense in Lubbock! We’ve never seen that before. I’m sure it’s going to score a lot of points, like other Texas Tech offenses have scored in the past, but there will be some truly fun elements of this offense this season.

Or a Shiel Wood defense! When was the last time that the Red Raiders actually had a competent and solid defense that was able to, on a regular basis, provide plenty of resistance to opposing offenses? When was the last time that Texas Tech had a good offense and a moderately decent and functional defense? That might be a first, right?

Anyways, I’m getting a little off track. There are plenty of scheduling “firsts” for Texas Tech this season as well. Like the fact that Arkansas-Pine Bluff will be headed to Lubbock (and also the fact that the Red Raiders will face the Golden Lions). Or the fact that Texas Tech will take a road trip to Salt Lake City to play Utah for the first time in decades.

And also the fact that Kent State will be coming to Lubbock for a first ever meeting between the Red Raiders and the Golden Flashes.

Texas Tech Red Raiders to meet up with Kent State Golden Flashes for first time ever in 2025

These two teams have been playing football for a combined two centuries (and an overlapping amount of time equating to one century) and this will be the first time that we get to see the two of them match up. Which does make some sense. Different regions of the country. Different conferences. Different conference-affiliated bowl games.

And now we get to see the two teams meet up this season. Kent State doesn’t have that impressive of a team. This should be a good opportunity for the Red Raiders to continue building momentum before the schedule gets a bit more challenging. And it’ll be a brief opportunity to make a little more history. I’m here for it.
