The Texas Tech Red Raiders may hold on to the top spot in the latest edition of the ESPN FPI rankings, but it’s not by a massive margin. The Red Raiders are just barely ahead of the Utah Utes (despite the fact that Texas Tech beat Utah by 24 points earlier this season and Texas Tech has crushed just about everyone else they’ve played).

The Red Raiders look good though. Yes, they’ve got a loss to Arizona State while on the road, but that’s not exactly the end of the world and it seems like ESPN’s FPI agrees with that one.

Here’s how the teams from the Big 12 stand in the ESPN FPI rankings as we enter Week 14.

ESPN FPI rankings, week 14: Texas Tech takes top spot in the Big 12 with the Utah Utes close behind

  • No. 7 Texas Tech Red Raiders
  • No. 8 Utah Utes
  • No. 15 BYU Cougars
  • No. 30 Arizona Wildcats
  • No. 31 Iowa State Cyclones
  • No. 34 TCU Horned Frogs
  • No. 36 Arizona State Sun Devils
  • No. 40 Kansas State Wildcats
  • No. 43 Cincinnati Bearcats
  • No. 50 Kansas Jayhawks
  • No. 53 Baylor Bears
  • No. 57 Houston Cougars
  • No. 69 UCF Knights
  • No. 72 West Virginia Mountaineers
  • No. 77 Colorado Buffaloes
  • No. 116 Oklahoma State Cowboys

It’s great to see the Red Raiders at the top of this list (and also just near the top of the overall FPI rankings that consider everyone in the country). Texas Tech football has come a very long way in a very short amount of time. I’m not sure this sort of situation has sunk in for a lot of people. The Red Raiders are legitimately a team that could push for the national title this year.

That’s incredible.

And then, on the other end of it all is the Oklahoma State football team. The Cowboys are in a rough spot right now and it wasn’t that long ago that they were winning eight or more games a season with regularity. They’ve fallen pretty far pretty quickly.
