Though the Texas Tech football program appears to have the future of its quarterback position on very solid ground, the search for the next great Red Raider passer never ends. And in the class of 2026, head coach Joey McGuire and Co. are swinging for the fences.
This past weekend, Texas Tech hosted Celina, Texas prospect Bowe Bentley for a visit according to multiple sources including Tom Loy of 247Sports.com. That means that one of the best QBs in the country is considering becoming a Red Raider.
247Sports.com's composite rankings have the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder as the No. 18 quarterback and the No. 243 overall player in the class of 2026. A 4-star prospect, he has offers from Arizona, Florida State, Kansas State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, UCF, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, and others.
This past fall, Bentley led the Bobcats to a 16-0 record and a 4-A state title. In the process, he threw for well over 3,000 yards with 47 TD passes.
Of course, Tech is in great shape at the QB position. Looking past 2025, when senior Behren Morton will exhaust his eligibility, Tech will almost certainly turn to former 4-star prospect Will Hammond to run the offense in 2026 when he will be a redshirt sophomore.
What's more, in the class of 2025, the Red Raiders signed intriguing Lloyd Jones, a 3-star dual-threat QB from Hitchcock, Texas. However, due to an injury, he will miss much of the offseason leading up to his true freshman season which could delay his development a bit.
Still, the Red Raiders expect to have Hammond running the show for up to three seasons starting next fall. That would be an ideal development.
However, in the era of the transfer portal, it is never possible to have too much talent at the quarterback spot. If any program knows that, it would be Texas Tech, which has had to start multiple QBs for at least one game in every season since 2017.
Thus, the Red Raiders appear to be targeting Bentley as their quarterback of choice in the current recruiting class. He's already one of the top players in Texas and by the time he completes his high school career, he could be one of the most coveted QBs in the nation. Hopefully, he decided to call Lubbock home.
