Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders didn’t need to do much this past week to move up in the AP Poll. They just simply didn’t play a game this week. And Texas Tech moved up.
Now, it is worth noting quickly that Texas Tech probably didn't move as much as they should have given all of the chaos that took place in the rankings around them, but they still moved up, and that’s what matters here as we head into Week 6.
Last week, Texas Tech was ranked as the No. 12 team in the country in the AP Poll, following the Red Raiders’ dominant, 24-point win over the previously No. 16 ranked Utah Utes. Now, following a week off from doing much, Texas Tech now sits as the No. 11 team in the country.
Let’s take a look at the latest rankings:
College football rankings, Week 6: Texas Tech moves to No. 11 in latest AP Poll rankings
- Ohio State Buckeyes
- Oregon Ducks
- Miami Hurricanes
- Ole Miss Rebels
- Oklahoma Sooners
- Texas A&M Aggies
- Penn State Nittany Lions
- Indiana Hoosiers
- Texas Longhorns
- Alabama Crimson Tide
- Texas Tech Red Raiders
- Georgia Bulldogs
- LSU Tigers
- Iowa State Cyclones
- Tennessee Volunteers
- Vanderbilt Commodores
- Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
- Florida State Seminoles
- Missouri Tigers
- Michigan Wolverines
- Notre Dame Fighting Irish
- Illinois Fighting Illini
- BYU Cougars
- Virginia Cavaliers
- Arizona State Sun Devils
Ole Miss moved up (and LSU moved down) after the Rebels held on to beat the Tigers in Oxford over the weekend. Penn State dropped a bit (and Oregon jumped up) after the Ducks went to Happy Valley to beat the Nittany Lions in overtime.
I kind of suspected that Alabama would leapfrog the Red Raiders following the Crimson Tide’s win over Georgia, but at least Texas Tech is ranked ahead of Georgia (and also LSU). And of course, the biggest mover was Florida State, who fell to No. 18 after losing to the now No. 24 Virginia Cavaliers.
