Generally speaking, it’s pretty impressive that Gerry Glasco’s Texas Tech Red Raiders have managed to go out and succeed on 88 percent of their base stealing attempts. That number alone is just flat out impressive.
Things get even more remarkable when you factor in that the Red Raiders have attempted to steal a base on 93 different occasions. The Red Raiders are successful in stealing bases on a very high frequency and they’re also very aggressive about the way they steal bases.
So far this season, Texas Tech has 23 more steals than the next best Big 12 team. That is a truly remarkable stat as well.
Texas Tech leads the Big 12 in stolen bases, and the efficiency is elite as the Red Raiders have 82 stolen bases on 93 attempts
Here’s how the rest of the conference pales in comparison to Texas Tech right now:
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 82 stolen bases on 93 attempts
- Oklahoma State Cowgirls - 59 stolen bases on 69 attempts
- Baylor Bears - 43 stolen bases on 56 attempts
- Arizona State Sun Devils - 41 stolen bases on 52 attempts
- UCF Knights - 40 stolen bases on 52 attempts
- Kansas Jayhawks - 34 stolen bases on 45 attempts
- Arizona Wildcats - 32 stolen bases on 34 attempts
- Houston Cougars - 25 stolen bases on 33 attempts
- Iowa State Cyclones - 24 stolen bases on 29 attempts
- Utah Utes - 19 stolen bases on 23 attempts
- BYU Cougars - 13 stolen bases on 20 attempts
Again, it’s so impressive that the Red Raiders are able to go about stealing bases with such high volume and efficiency. The Red Raiders are using their speed as a calculated weapon on the basepaths and no other team in the Big 12 is able to come close to what Texas Tech is doing here.
When you look at the numbers, Texas Tech is converting stolen bases at a rate where it makes so much sense to just keep trying. This isn’t a gamble for Gerry Glasco and the Red Raiders, it’s a high-percentage play that brings a lot of value.
