A 42-point shutout win certainly helped the Texas Tech Red Raiders earn a bit of respect this week in the latest college football top 25 rankings from the folks voting on the AP Poll. While Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders certainly still have plenty of work to do, they still have demonstrated that they are among the top 15 teams in the country and also among the best in the Big 12.
The Red Raiders, at 7-1 overall and 4-1 in Big 12 play, have beaten some pretty impressive teams in some pretty impressive ways. That includes wins over the Utah Utes, who are 6-2 on the year, and the Houston Cougars, who are also 7-1 on the season like Texas Tech happens to be.
Texas Tech’s lone loss so far this season happens to be from the Arizona State Sun Devils, who are 5-3 on the year and certainly seem capable of causing chaos and headaches for folks this year.
And because of that resume and all that Texas Tech has accomplished this season, including securing all seven of those wins by at least 24 points, the Red Raiders are sitting as the No. 2 team in the Big 12 in the latest AP Poll rankings.
AP Poll college football rankings, Week 10: Texas Tech earns the second-highest ranking among Big 12 teams
Here are the top teams in the Big 12 according to the latest AP Poll Top 25:
- BYU Cougars - No. 10 overall (tied with Miami Hurricanes)
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - No. 13 overall
- Cincinnati Bearcats - No. 17 overall
- Houston Cougars - No. 22 overall
- Utah Utes - No. 24 overall
Assuming the Red Raiders are able to go to Manhattan to beat a surging Kansas State Wildcats team that is now 4-4 on the season after winning three of its last four games, Texas Tech will return home to Lubbock for a top 15 matchup with the BYU Cougars, who are on a bye week this week. And that matchup is sure to get plenty of attention given the potential consequences of that one.
