Week 4 is here for the 2025 Texas Tech football season and that means we finally get to see Joey McGuire and the No. 17 Red Raiders enter into Big 12 conference play.
While plenty of people have been some degree of skeptical of just how good the Red Raiders can be this season, this weekend’s matchup against the No. 16 Utah Utes is the perfect opportunity for Tech to showcase just how good the Red Raiders can be this season.
Both Texas Tech and Utah are unbeaten at 3-0 entering this matchup. Both teams have great offenses. Both the Red Raiders and the Utes have surprisingly solid defenses through the first three weeks of play. And both of these teams are looking to show that they’re the best team in the Big 12 this season.
This game is in Salt Lake City and that could certainly impact how things play out. And if you ask the computing machines behind the ESPN Analytics Matchup Predictor, you’ll find that the Red Raiders aren’t being given a great shot of coming out on top of this road game.
The ESPN Matchup Predictor isn’t giving the Texas Tech Red Raiders a great chance in their Week 4 matchup vs. Utah
Right now, heading into this Week 4 matchup with the Utes, the ESPN Matchup Predictor (which is powered by ESPN Analytics) has Texas Tech with just a 35 percent chance of getting a win on the road vs. Utah.
That’s despite the fact that Tech has outscored its opponents 174-35 through the first three weeks in games that could have been even more lopsided than they were. That’s also despite the fact that the Red Raiders have drastically improved on the defensive side of the ball thanks to the magic of NIL money and the transfer portal.
The math magic computing machinery has Utah with a better chance of coming out on top.
And it’s not like the Utes aren’t also an impressive team. They have certainly earned their spot at No. 16 in the country (and probably actually should be ranked a little higher, to be completely honest). This game is going to be interesting.
