It’s a great time to be a Red Raider. If you ask Joey McGuire, that’s exactly what he’d say. And I suspect that there’s no way he’s alone in believing that this is a special moment for the entirety of the Texas Tech athletics department.

With the way McGuire’s own Red Raiders are playing this season (12-1 overall, a Big 12 championship, and the No. 4 seed in the College Football Playoff), the recent success of the Texas Tech softball team, and the way both of the basketball teams secured huge wins over the weekend, it’d be hard to argue against that.

It’s a pretty special moment for folks in Lubbock right now.

And it’d be easy for McGuire just to focus on what he, his staff, and his team are bringing to that equation, so I appreciate that he’s sharing the spotlight with two programs who are also thriving and accomplishing great things right now.

‘Great time to be a Red Raider’: Joey McGuire praises Texas Tech basketball for securing shocking wins vs No. 15 Baylor, No. 3 Duke

On Monday, during his press conference in which he was previewing the Texas Tech football team’s upcoming Orange Bowl matchup with the Oregon Ducks, McGuire started things off by heaping praise to the Texas Tech men’s and women’s basketball teams.

“Congrats to Krista,” McGuire said. “As soon as I got off the field yesterday, I got to see the last two minutes of the Baylor-Texas Tech game and I’m so fired up for her and the way the Lady Raiders are playing.”

Which, if you didn’t know, Texas Tech managed to beat No. 15 Baylor for the first time in 14 years. The Lady Raiders snapped a 31-game losing streak to the Bears. It was a big deal!

“And then probably the same last two minutes of the Duke-Red Raider game on Saturday night,” McGuire continued. “I had multiple TVs going and so man, so fired up for Grant and his guys. That was fun to watch, it’s a great time to be a Red Raider.”

Hard to disagree. And if Texas Tech keeps winning, it'll continue to be a great time to be a Red Raider.
