Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football program continue to make some rather impressive moves on the recruiting trail. This time, the Texas Tech Red Raiders managed to beat out the likes of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs, and a number of other elite programs for the commitment of a 5-star edge out of Baltimore.Â
Anthony Sweeney, a 6-foot-4 and 230 pound edge who is rated among the best players in the country and has the talent to help define and elevate a football program, is not committed to play for McGuire and the Red Raiders.
And that’s huge. This is a guy who 247Sports has ranked as the No. 23 player in the country. 247Sports also has Sweeney as a 4-star prospect, but the composite ranking places him as a 5-star.Â
Either way, he’s really talented and plenty of other teams were hoping to get him.

Unsurprisingly, Sweeney had offers from all over the country. That includes the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Auburn Tigers, the Clemson Tigers, the Florida Gators, the Florida State Seminoles, Michigan Wolverines, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Ohio State Buckeyes, Tennessee Volunteers, and Texas A&M Aggies.Â
Now, according to 247Sports, Sweeney is the second-highest rated recruit in the 2027 recruiting class for the Red Raiders. He is now the seventh player in the recruiting class for Texas Tech.
And there’s momentum here. The Red Raiders, fresh off a historic 2025 season and looking to continue to build for the future, have continued to accumulate talent. This next recruiting class now sits at No. 9 in the nation according to 247Sports. I’m sure nobody would be shocked to learn that this is also the best recruiting class in the Big 12 at the moment.Â
We’ll see if the Red Raiders will indeed get Sweeney to actually sign, there’s a ton of things that could change between now and signing day, but still, this is huge.
