It’s not often that I find myself grateful that the Texas Longhorns won a game, but that was the case this past weekend as UT welcomed the Texas A&M Aggies to Austin and then subsequently gave them a 10-point loss in the process.

And while this game doesn’t really impact the Big 12 anymore and it doesn’t really do much to Texas Tech directly, it did help the Red Raiders out a bit when it came to the college football rankings and also possibly the College Football Playoff seeding.

Prior to A&M’s loss to the Longhorns, the Red Raiders were a bit behind the Aggies in the rankings and such. That’s no longer the case and the most recent edition of the Coaches Poll Top 25 college football rankings are a great example of that.

Coaches poll rankings, Week 15: Texas Tech slides up to No. 6 after the Red Raiders crushed West Virginia in a 49-0 shutout road win

Here’s what the Top 25 teams look like according to the Coaches Poll college football rankings:

  • Ohio State Buckeyes
  • Indiana Hoosiers
  • Georgia Bulldogs
  • Oregon Ducks
  • Ole Miss Rebels
  • Texas Tech Red Raiders
  • Texas A&M Aggies
  • Oklahoma Sooners
  • Notre Dame Fighting Irish
  • Alabama Crimson Tide
  • BYU Cougars
  • Vanderbilt Commodores
  • Miami Hurricanes
  • Texas Longhorns
  • Utah Utes
  • Virginia Cavaliers
  • USC Trojans
  • Michigan Wolverines
  • James Madison Dukes
  • North Texas Mean Green
  • Tulane Green Wave
  • Arizona Wildcats
  • Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
  • Tennessee Volunteers
  • Navy Midshipmen

Of course, as much as that UT win over A&M helped the Red Raiders scoot up a slight bit in the top end of the Coaches Poll rankings, the Longhorns also benefited slightly with these rankings. With their win over the Aggies (and then the Utah Utes struggling against the Kansas Jayhawks), Texas managed to leapfrog over Utah and get to No. 14.
