Texas Tech has landed another big fish from the transfer portal. Thursday, it was reported that Georgia Tech edge rusher Romello Height will transfer to Texas Tech to help fix one of the Red raiders' greatest flaws in 2024, the pass rush.
The 6-foot-3, 240-pound native of Georgia will be playing for his fourth university. He also has spent time at Auburn and USC.
As a high school prospect in the class of 2020, which was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Height was rated a 4-star prospect by 247Sports.com. He was the No. 384 overall player and No. 25 outside linebacker in his class when he committed to Auburn.
Height spent two seasons with the Tigers appearing in only one game in 2020 and making 19 tackles in 2021. Then, he transferred to USC for the 2022 season. There he played in 12 games recording 21 tackles, six tackles for loss, four sacks, and a fumble recovery.
This fall, he made 34 tackles with 2.5 sacks in 12 games for Georgia Tech. He also had an interception to his credit.
Now, he's set to join the Red Raiders and expectations are high. He is ranked the No. 25 overall player and No. 5 edge rusher in the portal according to 247Sports.
In 2024, Tech struggled to get productivity from its edge rushers. Before the season even began, the program lost potential starters Joseph Adedire and Dylan Spencer for the season.
Then, as the season wore on, other edge rushers simply couldn't find a way to impact opposing passing games with much consistency. In fact, Terrel Tillmon led Tech's edge rushers with just 3.5 sacks this season. What's more, no other edge rusher had more than 2.0 sacks in the regular season.
While Height has never had a monster season when it comes to rushing the passer, he is a veteran player with loads of experience at the power-conference level. What's more, those who have watched him play can see his athleticism jump off of the screen. If he can realize his full potential, he could help transform the Red Raider pass rush in 2025.
