Texas Tech lining up visit with productive WR transfer to boost offense

The Red Raiders continue to look for help at wide receiver via the transfer portal, even after the commitment of Micah Hudson over the weekend.

Another day brings more recruiting news for the Texas Tech football program as the Red Raiders' efforts in the transfer portal continue. Peke Nakos of On3 Sports reported Monday that head coach Joey McGuire and his staff are hosting James Madison transfer receiver Yamir Knight.

This might come as a surprise to some, given that Tech just landed the commitment of former 5-star signee Micah Hudson, who is coming back to the Red Raiders after transferring from Tech to Texas A&M during the December transfer window.

However, with Tech going all-in this offseason, it appears that McGuire is leaving no stone unturned as he tries to round out his roster. Now, Knight is apparently in the picture.

A 5-foot-8, 180-pounder, the Delaware native will be a junior in 2025. Last fall, he hauled in 53 catches for 605 yards and four touchdowns for JMU. Additionally, he returned 21 punts for a total of 173 yards, an average of 8.2 yards per return.

As a true freshman, Knight played in 11 games, racking up eight catches for 73 yards. That was good for 9.1 yards per catch.

The news that Tech is still courting potential slot receivers is not surprising, even with Hudson set to rejoin the roster. This past weekend, the Red Raiders hosted another transfer who would likely play the slot receiver position, Roy Alexander, who played at the FCS level last season for Incarnate Word.

As much as anything, this is an indication that Tech isn't satisfied with its options at inside receiver, where the program is trying to replace Josh Kelly, who was a 1,000-yard receiver last season. While many hope that Hudson might earn a starting role in the slot next year, Tech can't bank on that happening, given how little productivity he has had at the college level.

Instead, the Red Raiders are trying to find as close to a sure thing as possible, which makes sense considering how much the program has already invested to upgrade the roster across the board. So don't be shocked if Tech brings in yet another pass catcher to help round out the roster as McGuire and the Matador Club continue to put all of their efforts into changing this program's narrative in 2025.
