What Texas Tech is doing at the plate has to be stressful for opposing pitchers. Truly, it must be difficult to have to face the Red Raiders with all they’ve accomplished so far this season and the sort of pressure that they put on pitchers.

Texas Tech has managed to draw 160 walks this season, which is the most in the Big 12. What makes that total particularly interesting is the number of at bats the Red Raiders have done that in. Texas Tech has 898 at bats so far this season, which ranks as the 5th fewest in the Big 12.

When you factor in how the Red Raiders also lead the Big 12 in hits and home runs and now also walks, that’s impressive. It’s really remarkable what the Red Raiders are capable of doing at the plate.

Texas Tech leads the Big 12 in walks with 160 so far this season and the UCF Knights aren’t too far behind

Here’s how the rest of the Big 12 stands as the Red Raiders currently lead the way with 160 walks in 36 games:

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - 160 walks
  • UCF Knights - 155 walks
  • Utah Utes - 150 walks
  • Oklahoma State Cowgirls - 146 walks
  • Houston Cougars - 146 walks
  • Kansas Jayhawks - 135 walks
  • Iowa State Cyclones - 131 walks
  • Arizona State Sun Devils - 129 walks
  • Arizona Wildcats - 126 walks
  • Baylor Bears - 115 walks
  • BYU Cougars - 96 walks

A grand total of five walks separate the Red Raiders from the Knights, but interestingly enough UCF has managed to play two more  games than the Red Raiders. UCF also has a total of 948 at bats so far this season, which is a good bit more than Texas Tech’s 898.

An additional layer on top of that is how Oklahoma State and Houston are tied with 146 walks each. And then there’s the fact that Oklahoma State is 25-10 on the season while the Cougars are 17-21 right now. Walks certainly help win games, but they aren’t the only thing that determines that.
