Here is a look at some of the top headlines from around the Texas Tech athletic department for Monday, March 31, 2025.

Texas Tech softball dominates Jayhawks

The No. 13 Texas Tech softball team continued to rattle off Big 12 wins at an impressive rate this weekend by sweeping Kansas on the road in a three-game set. The Red Raiders now sit at 25-9 overall and 8-1 in league action.

Friday, star pitcher NiJaree Canady was the story as she tossed a no-hitter. In the 9-0 run-rule win, the Kansas native was brilliant, striking out 12 hitters in just five innings of work.

Saturday, the Red Raider bats remained hot in a 14-3 win in game one of a doubleheader. Tech crushed five homers and had six extra-base hits in the rout. In the circle, Samantha Lincoln tossed four complete innings, striking out four and giving up just one run.

In game two, things were a bit tighter, but Tech prevailed 4-1 with Canady back in the circle. She tossed all seven innings, striking out 14 and walking only two. Meanwhile, at the plate, Lauren Allred smashed a solo homer, her second long ball of the doubleheader.

Tech remains in first place in the Big 12 standings, ahead of second-place Arizona, which sits at 8-4. The Red Raiders next take on Abilene Christian on the road Wednesday before hosting Utah for three games this weekend.

Texas Tech baseball's struggles continue at Kansas State

The massively disappointing Texas Tech baseball season continued down the wrong path over the weekend as Tim Tadlock's team was swept on the road by Kansas State. That dropped the Red Raiders to just 8-16 overall and 4-5 in Big 12 play.

Friday night, starting pitching was again an issue as Tech fell behind 7-1 after two innings in a 10-5 loss. Emergency starter Jonny Lowe struggled by giving up seven earned runs on four hits in just 1.1 innings. He got the start because the scheduled starter, Mac Heuer, was unable to pitch due to injury.

Saturday, Tech fell 6-3. Again falling into a big hole, this time a 5-0 deficit after three innings, Tech couldn't rally. Starter Tyler Bourdreau struggled by allowing five earned runs in 2.2 innings of work. After he departed, the bullpen was stout, but Tech's bats were held in check with only six hits on the day, two of which were solo homers.

Sunday, the Red Raiders lost a heartbreaking 5-4 walk-off decision. Despite finally getting strong starting pitching in the form of one run over five innings from Zane Petty, Tech couldn't salvage the season finale. The bullpen was the problem in the loss giving up three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Having lost five of the last seven games, the Red Raiders now head into a mid-week game against Oklahoma in Frisco on Tuesday. The Sooners entered Monday ranked No. 9 in the country. Then, this weekend, Tech will host Cincinnati for three games. The Bearcats are 16-11 overall and have the same 4-5 Big 12 record that Tech does. Hopefully, the Red Raiders can start to find a groove this weekend at home.

Texas Tech women's tennis stays red hot

Finally, the Texas Tech women's tennis team deserves some love. Ranked No. 13 in the nation, the Red Raiders swept Colorado 4-0 in Boulder this weekend.

Saturday, Tech moved to 15-2 overall and 8-1 in Big 12 action with a dominating performance. One of the top doubles teams in America, Avelina Sayfetdinova and Mariia Hlahola earned a decisive 6-0 win. They are ranked the No. 4 doubles pair in the county. Meanwhile, the other Texas Tech doubles team, Kate Dmitrichenko/Hailey Murphy picked up a win to give Tech a full doubles point.

On the singles side, Sayfetdinova, Dmitrichenko, and Hlahola all won their matches to push Tech to the sweep. Next, the Red Raiders will take on West Virginia Friday in Morgantown.
