This weekend, Behren Morton should be making a pretty noteworthy return to playing for the Red Raiders as the Texas Tech football team goes on the road to face off against the Kansas State Wildcats. And this weekend, we’re going to see Texas Tech’s offense designed by an innovative mind that likes to ensure that his system has an appropriate amount of balance.
When Texas Tech meets up with the Wildcats in Manhattan, Kansas, the Red Raiders will have an opportunity to prove that they can establish their offense the way they want and whenever they want. That might not be the easiest thing to accomplish at any point ever, but it certainly is a worthwhile goal to have.
And for good reason. Texas Tech offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich seems to appreciate balance in what his team is able to do and he spoke about that recently.
Mack Leftwich discusses why it’s important for the Texas Tech offense to be balanced in its approach during games
During a press conference on Monday, Leftwich noted the importance of getting his offense on the field in a balanced way with regards to rushing and passing.
“The games that we’ve been successful, when we’ve really been in rhythm on offense, we’ve been able to do both,” Leftwich said. “You’ve got to be able to establish the run and then I think that does open up some of those explosive passes.”
I don’t think Mike Leach or some of the Air Raid guys from that coaching tree and school of thought would really agree with that assessment, but that’s understandable.
“I think when you’re not able to run the football, one, it’s hard to stay ahead of the chains and start, it’s hard to stay on schedule and play in rhythm on offense,” Leftwich explained.
It’s going to be important for the Red Raiders to try and run the ball. And we’ll see if that can pan out for them.
“You would like to see the running game get back going this week for sure, which will be a challenge because Kansas State’s good,” Leftwich continued.
