Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders are doing a pretty good job on the recruiting trail for the 2027 recruiting cycle. It’s still early, but Texas Tech is out there beating out the likes of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas Longhorns, and Texas A&M Aggies for four-star linebacker Jhadyn Nelson out of Houston, Texas.

Nelson has been busy.

According to the recruiting timeline on 247 Sports, he received one of his first official offers back in January and teams from across the country have very quickly become interested in his services, including the Miami Hurricanes, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Missouri Tigers, Kansas State Wildcats, Kentucky Wildcats, and so many others.

Obviously, as a highly talented kid from Texas, plenty of teams from Texas were also interested in getting a commitment from Nelson. Still, despite that, it looks like the Red Raiders’ recruiting efforts were pretty successful in securing Nelson’s interest in playing in Lubbock.

His recruiting profile on On3/Rivals lists Shiel Wood as Texas Tech’s primary recruiter for Nelson.

Which this seems like a good time to bring up that it’s certainly worth remembering that Wood has spent some time in the Houston area and likely has plenty of connections down that way given his time as the Houston Cougars’ defensive coordinator.

When you factor in just how much Texas Tech’s defense improved in just one season with Wood as the defensive coordinator in Lubbock (and also the fact that Texas Tech have very publicly committed to having Wood as the Red Raiders’ defensive coordinator for a while), there’s got to be plenty of interest in playing for him.

The folks over at On3/Rivals have Nelson rated as a four-star linebacker prospect. 247Sports currently has him listed as a three-star. Still, both have him among the best linebackers coming out of Texas in the 2027 cycle.
