Folks, if you’ve got the chance to have the best batting average in your conference, that’s something to embrace and celebrate. And if you’ve got the chance to own the best batting average in the Big 12 by a 50-point gap over the second best team, you should absolutely do that.
Right now, as the regular season is winding down, that’s exactly where Gerry Glasco’s Texas Tech softball team finds itself. With a 50-point advantage over the Arizona Wildcats in batting average.
Texas Tech has a .397 batting average. As a team. 48 games into the season. That’s insane. And Arizona is second in the Big 12 with a really impressive .347 batting average. But the gap between No. 1 and No. 2 is larger than the gap between No. 1 and No. 8 in the Big 12.
Texas Tech’s .397 batting average is by far the absolute best in the Big 12 and it really isn’t close at all
Here’s what the Big 12 looks like when arranged by the best batting averages in the conference:
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - .397 batting average
- Arizona Wildcats - .347 batting average
- Kansas Jayhawks - .339 batting average
- Iowa State Cyclones - .329 batting average
- Arizona State Sun Devils - .329 batting average
- UCF Knights - .327 batting average
- Oklahoma State Cowgirls - .316 batting average
- Utah Utes - .301 batting average
- Baylor Bears - .287 batting average
- BYU Cougars - .286 batting average
- Houston Cougars - .285 batting average
There’s no doubt that Texas Tech’s consistently impressive ability to go around and get contact against seemingly everyone that the Red Raiders face will help when it comes time for the NCAA Tournament. This team has a number of players who are all able to hit above .400 and that puts the Red Raiders in a great position for the postseason.
And again, it’s worth pointing out that Arizona has a really good batting average! Texas Tech is fundamentally an outlier in the Big 12 right now. The Red Raiders are an anomaly. In a good way. Let’s celebrate that.
