Mack Leftwich’s offensive system sure seems to be working well in Lubbock. Not only are the Texas Tech Red Raiders boasting the top scoring offense in the country after three weeks of play, but TTU quarterback Behren Morton is leading the Big 12 in passing touchdowns ahead of the Red Raiders’ matchup with the Utah Utes.

Just three games into the season (and those are three games that Morton hasn’t even played a full game in because of how lopsided they got for the Red Raiders) and Texas Tech’s quarterback has 11 touchdowns.

Assuming I’m doing my math right, he’s on pace to have 44 touchdown passes this season. But, I mean, that’s not even with Morton playing the entirety of a game just yet.

Big 12 passing leaders entering Week 4: Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton leads the way in passing touchdowns

Here’s the top 10 passers in the Big 12 when it comes to throwing touchdowns after three weeks of play:

  • Behren Morton, Texas Tech - 11 touchdowns
  • Sawyer Robertson, Baylor - 10 touchdowns
  • Jalon Daniels, Kansas - 9 touchdowns
  • Brendan Sorsby, Cincinnati - 8 touchdowns
  • Devon Dampier, Utah - 7 touchdowns
  • Rocco Becht, Iowa State - 7 touchdowns
  • Avery Johnson, Kansas State - 6 touchdowns
  • Noah Fifita, Arizona - 6 touchdowns
  • Josh Hoover, TCU - 6 touchdowns
  • Sam Leavitt, Arizona State - 5 touchdowns

It’s early in the season, and there’s plenty of football to be played. I feel like I say that a lot this time of year. But it’s indeed something that is true. And because of the small sample size, it’s hard to really get a feel for everyone and everything here.

That said, given how Morton really hasn’t even played a full game just yet and how he’s still leading the Big 12 in passing touchdowns, Texas Tech fans should be feeling pretty good about their starting quarterback and the way he fits into what Mack Leftwich wants to do on offense.

It is certainly feasible for Morton to throw for near 4000 yards and have over 40 touchdown passes this season. And that’s exciting to think about.
