As Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders get set to head southeast to meet up with Willie Fritz and the Houston Cougars, the Texas Tech football team is taking one of the most explosive passers in the Big 12 with them.
Behren Morton is currently beating out every other qualifying quarterback in the Big 12 when it comes to passing yards per completion. Part of that likely has to do with scheme and system. Part of that likely has to do with the amount of talent that the Red Raiders have at wide receiver this season. But a good part of it almost certainly has to do with the Red Raiders’ starting quarterback himself.
While many Texas Tech fans are absolutely enamored with the way Will Hammond looked against the Utah Utes, it’s still worth noting that, when healthy, Behren Morton is incredibly dangerous and productive when operating within Mack Leftwich’s offense.
And that’s a good thing for the Red Raiders. Having two solid quarterbacks and needing to figure out which one of them to play is a great problem to have.
Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton is the Big 12’s best at passing yards per completion as the Red Raiders enter Week 6
Here’s the top 10 passers in the Big 12, when ranked by passing yards per completion:
- Behren Morton, Texas Tech Red Raiders - 15.4 yards per completion
- Jalon Daniels, Kansas Jayhawks - 14.8 yards per completion
- Brendan Sorsby, Cincinnati Bearcats - 14.1 yards per completion
- Rocco Becht, Iowa State Cyclones - 14 yards per completion
- Josh Hoover, TCU Horned Frogs - 13.8 yards per completion
- Conner Weigman, Houston Cougars - 12.9 yards per completion
- Sawyer Robertson, Baylor Bears - 12.9 yards per completion
- Noah Fifita, Arizona Wildcats - 12.4 yards per completion
- Tayven Jackson, UCF Knights - 12.3 yards per completion
- Kaidon Salter, Colorado Buffaloes - 11.6 yards per completion
It’s a good thing to see a Texas Tech quarterback leading the Big 12 in any stat, truly. I’m a fan of it. And I’m intrigued to see how Morton will look on Saturday when he plays the Houston Cougars after returning from injury. Will he continue to play at this sort of level?
