Folks, as we continue to get closer and closer towards the end of the 2025 Texas Tech football season, it’s looking like the Red Raiders might truly be the best team in Texas. And if they’re not the best, they’re pretty dang close.

I know the Aggies over in College Station have an unbeaten record and play in a tougher conference, but this particular Texas Tech Red Raider team has been particularly dominant in each of its 10 wins and that likely makes the computers over at the Worldwide Leader in Sports pretty happy.

ESPN’s Football Power Index has Texas Tech as the No. 8 team overall in the latest rankings, which is really good. But as I was looking over the list, I noticed that the Aggies weren’t ranked ahead of Texas Tech this week.

And that’s when I started looking around and checking out where all of the teams from Texas are ranked. As it turns out, Texas Tech is currently ranked ahead of every other team from the state of Texas in ESPN’s FPI.

ESPN FPI college football rankings: Texas Tech sits at the top of the teams from the Lone Star State in Week 13

Here’s what that looks like in ESPN’s Football Power Index rankings this week:

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders (Big 12) - No. 8
  • Texas A&M Aggies (SEC) - No. 9
  • Texas Longhorns (SEC) - No. 12
  • SMU Mustangs (ACC) - No. 25
  • TCU Horned Frogs (Big 12) - No. 40
  • North Texas Mean Green (American) - No. 47
  • Baylor Bears (Big 12) - No. 52
  • Houston Cougars (Big 12)  - No. 55
  • UTSA Road Runners (American) - No. 75
  • Texas State Bobcats (Sun Belt) - No. 78
  • UTEP Miners (CUSA) - No. 121
  • Rice Owls (American) - No. 124
  • Sam Houston State Bearkats (CUSA) - No. 134

I can get on board with this one.

This will likely make some Texas A&M fans somewhere a little riled up (and that’s certainly their right, but they should absolutely take that up with ESPN, not me). Given the season the Aggies are having, I was shocked to see that A&M wasn’t ahead of Texas Tech here, but I’m certainly not complaining.

Now, the Red Raiders are off this week while the Aggies will host Samford. I wouldn’t expect that to really shuffle rankings around. Texas A&M should win that one with ease.

It’s next week that will get interesting. If Texas A&M can beat UT, then I would certainly expect to see the Aggies take the top spot back from Tech. We’ll see how it all unfolds over the next few weeks.
