Texas Tech has been having a ton of fun on the recruiting trail lately, picking up some really remarkable players in recent weeks. And of course, Texas Tech football fans have been enjoying seeing the Red Raiders recruit at a high level and beat out some pretty noteworthy teams along the way.
But right now, there is another Big 12 team that is technically beating Texas Tech when it comes to recruiting.
Not that the Red Raiders aren’t doing well recruiting, but there’s a Big 12 team that happens to have a 2026 class that is rated higher than where the Red Raiders are. And that’s admittedly a little annoying. It’s not the end of the world, but I’d appreciate it if Texas Tech was ahead of the rest of the conference.
Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders trail just one team in current Big 12 recruiting rankings
Let’s take a look at where McGuire and the Red Raiders stand in the Big 12 right now following all of that recent recruiting success.
Here’s the top five teams in the Big 12, according to 247 Sports:
- BYU Cougars
- Texas Tech Red Raiders
- Baylor Bears
- TCU Horned Frogs
- Kansas Jayhawks
And here’s the top five teams in the Big 12, according to On3:
- BYU Cougars
- Texas Tech Red Raiders
- Baylor Bears
- TCU Horned Frogs
- Kansas Jayhawks
If that looks like it’s the same, that’s because it is. Right now, the Red Raiders sit at No. 2 in both of these Big 12 recruiting rankings. And BYU is the No. 1 team, Baylor the No. 3 team, TCU the No. 4 team, and Kansas the No. 5 team.
It’s the same grouping. Top to bottom.
And it’s not a bad spot for Texas Tech to be in when you look at the big picture. The folks on the coaching staff doing the recruiting out in Lubbock probably care far more about getting players to commit as opposed to where the Red Raiders are in these rankings. BUT, it’d be nice for Tech to be at the top here.
For fan bragging rights, if nothing else.
