One of the most interesting storylines in this college football season is the way that the Texas Tech Red Raiders have scored a ton of points and their offense still feels like it’s flying under the radar in some ways.
I don’t know that I have a good way to explain it. Maybe it’s because the Red Raiders are just flat out always expected to be great on offense. But right now, Texas Tech has the No. 2 scoring offense in the country. The Red Raiders are No. 5 in the country in moving the ball and gaining yards.
And that’s a huge reason as to why they’re at this point in the season.
Still, for some reason, it feels like that’s not being talked about much on the national scale. It feels like that’s getting overlooked somehow. Maybe I’m just missing something, but the fact that Texas Tech currently officially owns the best scoring offense among the remaining College Football Playoff contenders is something that should absolutely be talked about.
Texas Tech is scoring more points per game than literally every other remaining College Football Playoff contender
Here’s where the Red Raiders rank among College Football Playoff contenders when examining the best scoring offenses in the country ahead of the quarterfinal round.
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 42.5 points per game - No. 2 overall
- Indiana Hoosiers - 41.9 points per game - No. 3 overall
- Oregon Ducks - 39.2 points per game - No. 9 overall
- Ole Miss Rebels - 37.5 points per game - No. 10 overall
- Ohio State Buckeyes - 34.9 points per game - No. 16 overall
- Miami Hurricanes - 32.2 points per game - No. 28 overall
- Georgia Bulldogs - 31.9 points per game - No. 31 overall
- Alabama Crimson Tide - 31.4 points per game - No. 33 overall
Mack Leftwich really should be commended for the work that he’s done to elevate the Red Raiders on offense this season. It’s not a shocker that Texas Tech, clearly a program known for producing potent offenses, is scoring a ton of points. But it is a bit of a surprise to see the Red Raiders being this impressive at scoring points at this point in the season.
Also, when you combine that with what Texas Tech is able to do on defense thanks to Shiel Wood and his work on that side of the ball? I mean, it’s incredible what all the Red Raiders have done this year. Truly incredible stuff.
