Texas Tech’s return to the Sun Bowl in January 1956 resulted in more frustration

Look, I just don’t think it’s a good idea for the Texas Tech Red Raiders to make the decision to go play in El Paso. I really don’t. It feels like a trap. It feels like something is absolutely, positively, truly going to go wrong every single time the Red Raiders decide to accept a bid to play in the Sun Bowl.

It would probably behoove the Red Raiders if they decided to never, ever play in the Sun Bowl once again. Because while I understand the way that Texas Tech struggled early on in bowl games that occurred between 1938 to 1949 wasn’t just a Sun Bowl issue, it really feels like it was primarily a Sun Bowl issue for Tech.

Let’s recap some of those first few Sun Bowl appearances for a quick moment.

  • 1938: a 1-point loss to West Virginia
  • 1942: a 6-point loss to Tulsa
  • 1948: a 1-point loss to Miami (Ohio)
  • 1951: an 11-point win vs. the Pacific Tigers (FINALLY, A WIN)

Now, what about the 1956 matchup against the Wyoming Cowboys?

Texas Tech football history: The Red Raiders probably should stop accepting Sun Bowl bids, if you ask me

A loss. It ended in a loss. A frustrating, 7-point loss at the hands of the Wyoming Cowboys for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. I, for one, think that Tech would be better off never playing in the Sun Bowl ever again. Through the first five Sun Bowl appearances for the Red Raiders, Texas Tech has been outscored 61 to 57.

WE’RE TALKING ABOUT A FOUR POINT DIFFERENCE HERE! AND THAT FOUR POINT DIFFERENCE HAS LED TO FOUR LOSSES AGAINST JUST ONE WIN OUT IN EL PASO FOR TEXAS TECH.

Just absurd stuff.

Back to the record book for a moment and we’ll see that this would end up being the final bowl game for the Red Raiders under DeWitt Weaver, who delivered the first two bowl game victories in program history.
