Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen a few deficiencies here and there from the Texas Tech offense. Some of that likely can be attributed to the various quarterback injuries that the Red Raiders are dealing with (starting quarterback Behren Morton has been dinged up at various times and backup quarterback Will Hammond is now out for the remainder of the season).
And while I still think that Mitch Griffis can thrive for the Red Raiders within the sort of offensive system that Mack Leftwich can deliver, I still think it’s important to see Texas Tech have someone like Morton back and healthy.
Largely because I’ve been really impressed with what Morton has been able to do when he’s been on the field and healthy. I’d like to see Texas Tech push the ball down the field by taking the top off of the defense with a deep pass or two against a team like Kansas State.
And we might see some of that, we might not. It remains to be determined. And if things are still weird for Texas Tech’s offense because of that, they’re going to continue to be ranked around No. 3 in the conference for total offense in Big 12 games.
Big 12 stats entering Week 10: Texas Tech ranks 3rd in the Big 12 in total offense when facing conference foes
These are the two teams ahead of Texas Tech right now when it comes to total offense in conference games (and then also everyone else behind the Red Raiders in this metric):
- Utah Utes - 452.8 yards per game
- UCF Knights - 442 yards per game
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 437.4 yards per game
- Cincinnati Bearcats - 437.2 yards per game
- Iowa State Cyclones - 423.6 yards per game
- Baylor Bears - 423.4 yards per game
- BYU Cougars - 422.2 yards per game
- Kansas State Wildcats - 407.4 yards per game
- Arizona Wildcats - 400.5 yards per game
- Arizona State Sun Devils - 398.2 yards per game
- Houston Cougars - 392.6 yards per game
- Kansas Jayhawks - 381.4 yards per game
- TCU Horned Frogs - 371.2 yards per game
- West Virginia Mountaineers - 302.4 yards per game
- Colorado Buffaloes - 293.8 yards per game
- Oklahoma State Cowboys - 278 yards per game
I, for one, think it would be good if the Red Raiders were able to get a smidge closer to the top of this one. I’d love to see the Red Raiders get back to scorching folks and scoring points by the dozen like they were back at the beginning of the season.
