Here is your Texas Tech Red Raiders news roundup for Friday, March 7, 2025.
Texas Tech Lady Raiders keep season alive in Kansas City
The only hope the Texas Tech women's basketball team has of making it to the NCAA Tournament is by winning the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City this week. While that goal is improbable, the Lady Raiders have made some waves despite being the No. 14 seed.
By knocking off No. 11 seed Kansas 57-53 on Wednesday and No. 6 seed Utah 75-64 on Thursday, the Lady Raiders have extended their season for at least one more day by reaching the Big 12 quarterfinals.
Wednesday, Bailey Maupin led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points while Jasmine Shavers and Denae Fritz each added 11 as the Lady Raiders moved to 16-16 on the season. The Lady Raiders shot 43.5 percent from the field as a team and outrebounded the Jayhawks 37 to 24. They also forced 15 Kansas turnovers while allowing the Jayhawks to shoot just 37.5 percent from the field.
Thursday, in their win over the Utes, Maupin led the way again with 22 points. Meanwhile, Shavers and Fritz added 12 apiece in the upset.
Tech shot 48.9% from the field and 50% (10-20) from 3-point range. Additionally, the Lady Raiders were 19-22 from the free-throw line.
Today, Tech will face No. 3 seed Oklahoma State at 8 p.m. Central as they look to keep their season alive yet again. This year, the teams met only once, a 71-68 win by OSU in Lubbock in late January. Hopefully, the Lady Raiders have another upset in them, and they can keep their improbable run in K.C. going.
Texas Tech baseball splits mid-week series before heading to Arizona
This week, the Texas Tech baseball team hosted its first mid-week series of the season. The Red Raiders went 1-1 against UC San Diego to move to 3-8 on the season.
Tuesday, in an 11-10 loss, the Red Raiders couldn't slug their way to a comeback. After falling behind 9-2 in the fourth inning on a blustery day in West Texas, Tech came within 90 feet of tying the game in the ninth inning, but the game-tying run was stranded at third base to end the game.
One highlight from that game was the 3.1 shutout innings tossed by freshman Will Jordan, who punched out seven hitters in his fourth career appearance as a collegiate. That wasn't the only sterling performance on the mound for Tech against UC San Diego this week, though.
Wednesday, Tech picked up a much-needed 13-1 win. In that game, the star was junior starting pitcher Tyler Boudreau. Picking up his first win of the year, he allowed no runs while giving up only two hits in six innings. He struck out nine while walking none on 84 pitches. His performance was desperately needed given the season-long struggles of the Red Raider pitching staff.
Now, the Red Raiders head to Phoneix, Arizona for a three-game set against Grand Canyon Friday through Sunday. The Antelopes are 8-4 on the season and have already picked up wins over Nebraska, Rutgers, San Diego State, and Pepperdine. Therefore, it will be another challenging weekend for Tim Tadlock and his team.
Texas Tech softball prepares for top-15 series at home
The No. 15 Texas Tech softball team is ready to open Big 12 play with a marquee home series against No. 13 Oklahoma State. This is the type of opportunity that the revamped and reloaded Red Raiders have been waiting all season for.
Oklahoma State was picked first in the Big 12 preseason poll, while Tech was picked second. Currently, OSU is 15-4 on the year, while Tech sits at 18-6.
OSU has won 16 of the last 17 games in this series, but the Red Raiders are looking to change that trend behind star pitcher NiJaree Canady, who is expected to play despite recently suffering a soft-tissue injury.
Friday, the teams will play a doubleheader at 6 and 8 p.m. Central to avoid potential weather issues on Saturday. The series will then wrap up Sunday at noon.
