The regular season is almost over, folks. Conference championships are just about here. We’ve got more rankings from the College Football Playoff committee to talk about. And you know, so far so good for Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
With the Red Raiders sitting at 10-1 overall and 7-1 against Big 12 teams, the Texas Tech football team looks really impressive when you zoom out. And when you zoom in just a little bit and take a look at some basic stats, you’ll find that this particular Texas Tech team truly is among the best in the country.
Right now, entering Week 14, Texas Tech is No. 3 in the nation when it comes to points scored per game (42.6 points per game from Mack Leftwich’s offense) and then No. 4 in the country at points allowed per game (12.3 points per game given up by Shiel Wood’s defense).
And so it shouldn’t be shocking that Texas Tech sits at No. 5 in the most recent College Football Playoff rankings. The Red Raiders are the top ranked team from the Big 12 (and it’s by a pretty solid margin). The next closest would be the BYU Cougars at No. 11 (followed by the Utah Utes at No. 13).

Just get a win against West Virginia this weekend when in Morgantown, secure a spot in the Big 12 championship game, and then handle business in the rematch with the BYU Cougars during the Big 12 title game. That’s it. Do that and the Red Raiders are in without any issue at all.
