When it comes to forcing turnovers and avoiding mistakes, there aren’t many teams that are better nationally than the Texas Tech Red Raiders. On the season, Texas Tech is sitting with a +17 turnover margin. That’s just flat out really impressive. And what it means is the Red Raiders have forced 17 more turnovers than they’ve committed.

That’s really good!

When you break that down to a per game basis, it means the Red Raiders are winning the turnover battle to the tune of a positive margin of 1.31 turnovers per game. And there aren’t many teams that are better than the Red Raiders at that.

In the College Football Playoff, there aren’t any teams that are better, but there is one team that the Red Raiders are currently tied with.

Texas Tech and Indiana lead the College Football Playoff contenders in turnover margin ahead of the Orange Bowl

With Texas Tech and Indiana leading the way, here’s how the remaining College football playoff contenders measure up against one another in turnover margin:

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - 1.31 per game - Tied for No. 2 overall
  • Indiana Hoosiers - 1.31 per game - Tied for No. 2 overall
  • Miami Hurricanes - 0.85 per game - No. 11 overall
  • Alabama Crimson Tide - 0.57 per game - No. 20 overall
  • Oregon Ducks - 0.46 per game - No. 29 overall
  • Ohio State Buckeyes - 0.38 per game - No. 37 overall
  • Ole Miss Rebels - 0 per game - Tied for No. 68 overall
  • Georgia Bulldogs - 0 per game - Tied for No. 68 overall

It’s interesting to see which of the remaining College Football Playoff teams are winning the turnover battle on a weekly basis and which of the contenders are just simply breaking even. Both Texas Tech and Indiana are thriving in this regard and the Miami Hurricanes aren’t that far behind.

Heck, the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oregon Ducks, and Ohio State Buckeyes are performing admirably here. They might be committing some turnovers, but they’re getting the ball back more often than they’re giving it away.

As for Ole Miss and Georgia? Well, they’re just breaking even on a weekly basis. It could be worse for the Rebels and Bulldogs, but it could certainly also be better for both of those teams.
