As college basketball teams across American wrap up their seasons, key players from those squads are announcing their intention to enter the transfer portal. Thus, even though the Texas Tech basketball team has yet to even begin its NCAA Tournament run, there are reasons to keep an eye on what next year's team might look like.

One player to know is 6-foot-10 forward Nick Davidson. A California native, he has played the past three seasons for Nevada but now is in the portal.

According to national basketball reporter Joe Tipton of On3 Sports, Davidson has heard from a number of programs. Tipton reports that Texas Tech along with North Carolina, Kentucky, Louisville, Clemson, St. John's, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Ohio State, SMU, and numerous others have reached out to Davidson since he decided to leave Nevada.

As a prospect in the class of 2021, Davidson was a 3-star recruit. However, at the time, he was only 6-foot-8.

As a recruit, his most high-profile offers were from Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, and Georgia Tech. However, he would sign with the Wolfpack.

After redshirting as a true freshman, he became a regular contributor in 2022-23. That season, he averaged 6.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

The next season, Davidson posted 12.2 points and 7.3 boards per game. Then, in 2024-25, he put up 15.8 points and 6.5 rebounds. He also blocked 1.2 shots per game this season, a career-high.

Though Davidson is almost seven feet tall and weighs 238 pounds, he isn't just a back-to-the-basket forward. In fact, this season, he shot 37.1% from 3-point range while averaging 1.4 3-point makes and 3.8 3-point attempts per game.

It is important to keep in mind that in 2022-23, Davidson was a teammate of current Texas Tech forward Darrion Williams at Nevada. Whether or not that is enough of a connection to give the Red Raiders a leg up in this recruiting battle is anyone's guess.

Of course, after this season, Tech will need to add some size to the roster. With JT Toppin likely to head to the NBA Draft and Federiko Federiko being a senior, the program could lose both of its post players. (Federiko might be able to return next season if the NCAA continues to grant players who have spent time playing in the JUCO ranks an extra year of eligibility.)

Therefore, keep an eye on Davidson and his recruitment. He might become the next key player from the Mountain West Conference to join the Red Raiders via the portal.
