Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red raiders happen to be really, really good this year. It certainly makes it possible to say that when all of your wins are by at least 22 points and that’s the case with the Red Raiders this year.
Texas Tech is just flat out really dang good.
And it looks like ESPN’s Football Power Index certainly agrees with that. The Red Raiders are still in the top 10 of the ESPN FPI rankings and could move up a bit depending on what happens around the country (and in the Big 12 championship game, assuming Texas Tech takes care of business and makes it there).
ESPN FPI Top 25 college football rankings, Week 14: Texas Tech Red Raiders sit at No. 7 ahead of matchup with West Virginia
Here’s what the top 25 looks like in the ESPN FPI rankings as we enter Week 14:
- Ohio State Buckeyes
- Indiana Hoosiers
- Notre Dame Fighting Irish
- Oregon Ducks
- Alabama Crimson Tide
- Georgia Bulldogs
- Texas Tech Red Raiders
- Utah Utes
- Texas A&M Aggies
- Miami Hurricanes
- USC Trojans
- Texas Longhorns
- Ole Miss Rebels
- Oklahoma Sooners
- BYU Cougars
- Tennessee Volunteers
- Vanderbilt Commodores
- Michigan Wolverines
- Penn State Nittany Lions
- Missouri Tigers
- Washington Huskies
- Iowa Hawkeyes
- SMU Mustangs
- Auburn Tigers
- LSU Tigers
Looking around the rankings, we’re going to talk a bit about a few teams other than Texas Tech for a little bit.
I think it’s great that the Washington Huskies made it here. Yes, they’ve got an ugly loss to the Wisconsin Badgers, but they’ve otherwise been really impressive in the second year of a complete rebuild with Jedd Fisch.
It is still so bizarre to me to see the Penn State Nittany Lions, theAuburn Tigers, and the LSU Tigers in the top 25 here. I get that they’ve both had some impressive moments, but they’ve also been utterly unimpressive on numerous occasions throughout the season.
As for the rest of the top 25? I think it’s interesting to see the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at No. 3 right now. That intrigues me a bit. Also, Alabama at No. 5. That’s a team that will be interesting to keep an eye on. We’ll see what happens with the Crimson Tide moving forward.
