Look, in life, there’s so many things where it’d be good to be a fan of the team that has more of something than any other team in its conference. There’s so many different angles where it would be great to have more of something than everyone else you compete against.
Being a fan of the college baseball team that delivers more walks than literally everyone else in the Big 12? That’s NOT a good thing. That’s not a good thing at all. Right now, Texas Tech’s pitching staff has delivered more walks than any other pitching staff in the Big 12 and it’s part of why the Red Raiders are having such issues these days.
This isn’t the only problem that the Texas Tech pitching staff is having, but it’s a rather significant one for the Red Raiders.
Texas Tech has somehow managed to walk more batters than any other team in the Big 12 and that’s not a good thing at all
Right now, Texas Tech’s pitching staff has issued 142 walks in 227 innings, which calculates out to 5.6 walks per nine innings. That’s a lot of walks to have in a game. And it’s one reason why the Red Raiders are scored so often against.
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 142 walks
- BYU Cougars - 137 walks
- ARizona State Sun Devils - 130 walks
- Oklahoma State Cowboys - 124 walks
- TCU Horned Frogs - 119 walks
- Houston Cougars - 119 walks
- Kansas Jayhawks - 111 walks
- Arizona Wildcats - 110 walks
- Cincinnati Bearcats - 107 walks
- Utah Utes - 102 walks
- Baylor Bears - 97 walks
- West Virgiinia Mountaineers - 96 walks
- UCF Knights - 94 walks
- Kansas State Wildcats - 92 walks
Comparing Texas Tech (the worst team in this category) to Kansas State (the best team in this category) is interesting. The Red Raiders have managed to issue 50 more walks so far.
Given that Texas Tech has played 27 games and Kansas State has played 26 games, there shouldn’t be that wide a gap between them. That’s roughly two extra base runners per game for Texas Tech’s opponents than what Kansas State’s foes are getting.
That’s not the only issue that Texas Tech’s pitching staff has right now, but it’s certainly not making things easier for the Red Raiders to go out and win games.
