While the pitching staff might be a mess for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, things are really working out for Tim Tadlock’s team when it comes to what’s happening at the plate. Right now Texas Tech’s offense leads the Big 12 in batting average, slugging, on-base percentage, and RBIs.

But there’s one more stat that is certainly intriguing to keep an eye on. The Texas Tech Red Raiders have struck out just 190 times in the 27 games they’ve played up to this point in the season. Right now, that ranks as the 4th-fewest in the conference. And as Texas Tech continues to try to survive in the conference, that matters.

Especially when you look at where some of the other Big 12 teams are standing in that sort of stat at the moment.

Texas Tech strikes out fewer times than just about every other team in the Big 12, which is something to enjoy as the team struggles

This is how the conference stands right now when it comes to their batters striking out:

  • UCF Knights - 169 strikeouts
  • Arizona State Sun Devils - 182 strikeouts
  • Utah Utes - 189 strikeouts
  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - 190 strikeouts
  • West Virginia Mountaineers - 191 strikeouts
  • Houston Cougars - 201 strikeouts
  • Kansas State Wildcats - 209 strikeouts
  • TCU Horned Frogs - 215 strikeouts
  • Kansas Jayhawks - 232 strikeouts
  • Arizona Wildcats - 239 strikeouts
  • Baylor Bears - 267 strikeouts
  • Cincinnati Bearcats - 268 strikeouts
  • BYU Cougars - 270 strikeouts
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys - 291 strikeouts

For the Red Raiders to be sitting where they are in the Big 12 when it comes to strikeouts is noteworthy. There’s an advantage there. Especially when you look at how two teams in the conference have already hit 270 or more strikeouts on the season this early in the season.

And when you combine what Texas Tech is able to do at the plate with the fact that they’re not just striking out in dumb ways, there’s a lot to celebrate and be proud of there.
