In addition to being one of the most powerful teams at the plate, the Texas Tech softball team is also one of the most disciplined teams when at bat. Consistently, across the entirety of this lineup, folks are worried about pitching to the Red Raiders and they have to be strategic in approaching Texas Tech’s batters. And the Red Raiders just don’t swing at junk all that often.

All throughout this season, Texas Tech has managed to draw a ton of walks. The Red Raiders are currently leading the Big 12 when it comes to walks drawn. When you add in how Texas Tech is also hitting .390 and has 113 home runs on the season, it’s probably frightening for opposing pitchers who are trying to pitch around this team.

Because you can’t pitch around this team. And Texas Tech is able to take full advantage of that.

Texas Tech leads the Big 12 in walks drawn and that might be one of the most fascinating aspects of the Red Raiders this season

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - 236 walks in 52 games
  • Utah Utes - 215 walks in 52 games
  • Iowa State Cyclones - 206 walks in 51 games
  • UCF Knights - 200 walks in 51 games
  • Houston Cougars - 200 walks in 51 games
  • Oklahoma State Cowgirls - 183 walks in 47 games
  • Kansas Jayhawks - 178 walks in 49 games
  • Arizona State Sun Devils - 177 walks in 51 games
  • Baylor Bears - 162 walks in 51 games
  • Arizona Wildcats - 155 walks in 47 games
  • BYU Cougars - 138 walks in 47 games

There’s two sides to walks drawn at this high of a frequency for the Red Raiders. There’s discipline at the plate for Texas Tech and then there’s also the way that opposing teams are reluctant to try to challenge Texas Tech’s hitters. Which makes sense with the way the Red Raiders will put the ball over the fence with a regular cadence.

And you can compare that to this weekend’s foe, the Baylor Bears, who have struggled all season long at the plate. Folks aren’t as worried about the Bears and Baylor has drawn just 162 walks this year.
