There’s a number of different categories where it’s clear that the Texas Tech Red Raiders are far and away the best team in the Big 12. With all of the talent that the Red Raiders have accumulated and the powerful bats that Texas Tech has, this is a team that is poised to do some damage at the plate and shut folks down in the circle.
It’s not surprising that Texas Tech is currently leading the Big 12 with a total of 363 hits this season, but the Red Raiders aren’t too far ahead of the second place Kansas Jayhawks. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a gap, but it’s not a massive canyon of a gap. It’s just a gap.
And it’s a 17-hit sort of gap. It’s a sizable gap, but it’s not something that totally distances the Red Raiders from the rest of the conference.
Texas Tech has managed to rack up more hits than any other Big 12 team, but the Kansas Jayhawks aren’t all that far behind
Here’s what that looks like right now:
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 363 hits in 36 games
- Kansas Jayhawks - 346 hits in 36 games
- Arizona Wildcats - 315 hits in 35 games
- UCF Knights - 311 hits in 38 games
- Arizona State Sun Devils - 310 hits in 37 games
- Utah Utes - 294 hits in 35 games
- Iowa State Cyclones - 286 hits in 33 games
- Oklahoma State Cowgirls - 278 hits in 35 games
- Houston Cougars - 268 hits in 39 games
- Baylor Bears - 254 hits in 34 games
- BYU Cougars - 203 hits in 32 games
Something that’s intriguing about this is examining the subtle differences here between Texas Tech and Kansas. While the Jayhawks are just 17 hits back, they’ve had 953 at bats this season. Texas Tech, on the other hand, has had 898 at bats. The Red Raiders are more productive and more efficient. And they’re really, really good.
