There’s not another offense in the Big 12 that is averaging more passing yards per game than what the Texas Tech Red Raiders are bringing to the table. It’s just not happening. Mack Leftwich, Texas Tech’s offensive coordinator, has helped develop a remarkable offense that has yielded some truly impressive results through the first four games of the season.

As we enter Week 6 and the Red Raiders come off their bye week (and also prepare for their upcoming game against the Houston Cougars), we’re seeing how Texas Tech’s passing attack is producing more yards per game than every other Big 12 team.

And that includes the Baylor Bears and the Jake Spavital-led Air Raid that is happening over in Waco. That, my friends, is something that is truly interesting.

Texas Tech boasts the Big 12’s best passing attack as the Red Raiders enter Week 6

Let’s take a look at the Big 12 passing offense and see where everyone stands as it pertains to passing yards per game right now:

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - 368.5 passing yards per game
  • Baylor Bears - 349.4 passing yards per game
  • TCU Horned Frogs - 320.8 passing yards per game
  • Cincinnati Bearcats - 288 passing yards per game
  • Kansas Jayhawks - 267.2 passing yards per game
  • Arizona Wildcats - 249.5 passing yards per game
  • Iowa State Cyclones - 235.2 passing yards per game
  • UCF Knights - 234.5 passing yards per game
  • Utah Utes - 226.6 passing yards per game
  • Colorado Buffaloes - 201.8 passing yards per game
  • Houston Cougars - 208 passing yards per game
  • Arizona State Sun Devils - 207.8 passing yards per game
  • Kansas State Wildcats - 203.8 passing yards per game
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys - 202 passing yards per game
  • BYU Cougars - 184.5 passing yards per game
  • West Virginia Mountaineers - 179.4 passing yards per game

I’ve mentioned this before elsewhere and I’ll mention it again, but it’s still interesting to me that Texas Tech is operating an offense that closely resembles what Baylor had around a decade ago while the Bears are utilizing the Air Raid, a system that has defined Texas Tech’s identity for much of the past two decades. Also, hey, fun fact that has been discussed at length elsewhere, but Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson is one of the last quarterbacks to have a chance to play for Mike Leach.

And the Bears and Red Raiders have the best passing attacks in the conference right now. That’s fascinating to me.
